DANGER POINT

at the tech frontier of the liberal arts

I decided to trade blogs with a friend, and this is what I figured is what I love the most on the internets these days.

1. Daring Fireball - John Gruber - tech

Kottke (see #2) calls him the only dude he reads consistently, and it’s obvious why: Gruber is the smartest, most objective Apple advocate around. He has predicted everything about the current state of the Android vs. iOS battles, and he’s the first to admit when Apple has a real problem (e.g. worker’s rights in China, sandboxing in OSX store, etc. etc.).

2. Kottke.org - Jason Kottke - tech/linkblog/cool stuff

Kottke is the king of cool shit on the internet. A single trip here will provide you with more hilarious and unusual and unexpected and beautiful things than anywhere else ever. For instance:

3. Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal - Zach Weiner - webcomic/philosophy

My favourite webcomic ever - Weiner’s currently in the middle of a very long philosophy-related comic spree, so prior metaethical training might come in handy, but he’s pretty frickin’ hilarious, especially the SMBC Theatre skits that can be found further down the page.

4. Seth’s Blog - Seth Godin - personal improvement/marketing

You probably already know this dude, but Seth has the right attitude about marketing in this day and age. And I buy his idea that we should try very hard to be lynchpins of whatever system or institution we’re in - even though I have been slowly learning that it’s not as easy as simply doing what I feel needs to be done.

5. Philolzophy - two semi-anonymous girls - personal blog/philosophy

These two ladies met in university logic class, and have been analyzing their lives in the terms of analytic philosophy ever since. Basically this is a peek into my thought process about anything: is there confusion in the words we’re using to describe something? How can we get more precise about what we’re talking about? A great example is their recent post about how ‘creepy’ has a bunch of different uses and meanings, and we should be careful not to conflate them. This stuff is like crack to me.

6. The Verge - ed. Josh Topolsky - tech

Better than Gizmodo or Engadget or anything else ever is The Verge. They’ve got amazingly well-written editorials and investigative pieces, the best reviews around, and they have a shit ton of smart people writing for them, including Tim Carmody, who’s like my hero yo.

7. Reid On Travel - Robert Reid - travel

I met this dude while Saskatchewandering and have a ton of respect for him. He’s funny and witty and immensely creative, and every time I watch one of his videos I find myself wishing I could make videos that original and cool.

8. Om Malik - Om Malik - tech, venture capital

Smart dude who’s been in the Valley forever. Also, he’s behind GigaOm, which is very good.

9. SEOmoz blog - ed. Rand Fishkin - SEO and other inbound marketing stuff

The go-to resource for all things SEO and inbound. If you’ve wondered about it, they’ve had a Whiteboard Friday on it.
